My character just got bit by a vampire on Oblivion?

I was sleeping in the merchant inn so I could level up and then when I woke up it said i got bit by a vampire. What exactly happens to my character now? and how do I avoid getting bit again because I'm not a vampire on one of my saves its just on auto save. Is it better to be a vampire or not?
