High cholesterol question?
Left alone trying to keep it low leaves me no where. It was always high and I do have heart disease. I am on two meds and it keeps both the good and bad cholesterol levels where they should be. I'm grateful for two reasons. One, it does the job. Two, I don't get discouraged with trying myself and losing so if I eat what I want on occasion I'm still ok. Much less effort. Health wise you just can't do everything yourself. Modern meds are a God send.

At school I had no friends for a while as my friends didn't stay on for A-level. I used to chat to a girl in my class but I wouldn't say we were friends. We never arranged to meet up outside of school. She wasn't someone I clicked with. She's painfully shy, and when she speaks she only talks about boring things. Anyway after three yrs of no contact she asked me if I'd like to go for coffee. I figured she might be a different person now so agreed. Big mistake! I am a big talker and love to socialise but from the moment she. arrived I knew I was in for a long afternoon. The conversation flowed okay but only because I had to make a HUGE effort to ask questions and the conversation was dull. After 90 minutes I said I had to get back. Now I was hoping it was as bad for her as it was for me but she has invited me for coffee again. I thought I'd be kind as she has no friends and agree to go with her (although I changed it to cinema as then I dnt have to talk much to her) but the cinema trip is next week and I'm dreading it. I just don't want to go. Being in contact is causing me unnecessary sadness and by her spending time with me I'm stopping her meeting someone who will genuinely like her. I tried to get another friend to become friends with her but they say they don't want to. I can't tell her I don't want to be friends as she's too sensitive for that. How do I put an end to all this?

Is extremely yellow urine a sign of diabetes?
I noticed that my urine was really yellow, so I started drinking water regularly (I never used to.) Even with the increase in water my urine has remained the same color. Is this a sign of diabetes. I have some of the other symptoms but I don't want to scare myself into identifying these things as diabetes signs when they could be any other number of things. (These symptoms are excessive thirst, dry mouth, fatigue.) I bought a home-glucose test to see if my levels are too high and I'll schedule an appointment with my doctor. I'm wondering if this is a sign of either type of diabetes. I'm 18, 5'2" and 120 pounds but I don't have a family history so I'm a little confused.

Some people have a hard time trusting others. I have a feeling that these people are often not trustworthy themselves, as a person's views are often a reflection of who they are. I am a fairly trusting person, and consider myself fairly trustworthy. Do you think my assessment seems correct for the most part? I realize that region and culture can play a role too (ex: I would have a very low level of trust for a stranger in NYC, but I would have a moderate level of trust for a new acquaintance in Tupelo, MS that seems reasonable).

Well I mean if you eat fast food type of stuff..like chicken nuggets,pizza,burgers,deep fried stuff then yea/maybe....but if you feel healthy and your heart doesn't bother you then I don't think there's an urgency to take action. Is zocor a good medicine for cholesterol?

It is perhaps the most widely studied of all the cholesterol-lowering medications. It is one of the better cholesterol medications available, along with Lipitor and Crestor. Just because Zocor is now available in a generic form does not make it any less godd as a medication. I would gladly take it myself.

Exercise: What is my problem?
For some reason I will go an exercise for weeks, and as soon as I start to feel good, something discourages me or something happens and I just stop altogether. I had to go to the docotor's one time, and I was confident that I had lost weight - but instead the scale said I gained TEN POUNDS! I just got angry and stopped exercising altogether, because it seemed like a waste of time. Any way to kind of "cure" this from happening? Because everytime i start an exercise routine, something blows it and I just give up.

I am an extremely serious 11th grade flutist, and I was wondering what it takes to get into prestigious music schools. I guess I should probably just ask my teacher, but it couldn't hurt to get some advice from you guys. I've held the top chair in my state since my sophomore year, I'm principal flute in 2 orchestras, I practice hours a day, I take private lessons, I perform in recitals and competitions every year, I know lots of solo and orchestra repertoire, I know all forms of minor scales and of course major scales, I have performed concerti with orchestra accompaniment, and I was one of 6 flutists selected for Governor's School for the Arts in my state. I also take part in chamber ensembles and go to festivals and clinics throughout the state. I know quite a lot of music history and theory, and I'm working on expanding my knowledge. Basically, I just try to do everything I can to better myself as a musician. I love playing flute SO much and I listen to classical music almost constantly. Do you think I have a chance?

Pregnant and platelets dropping?
am currently almost 38 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child... In december i had blood work and they told me my iron was low. I was put on 325 mg of iron 2 times a day. I later went for my blood glucose and the results showed I had low platelets. They were at 126.. Yesterday I went in for a follow up and they are lower at 113.. So I have to go get another CBC. How normal is this? Should I be worried about something else? People are telling me not to worry, but I can't stop worrying... If it was cholesterol I wouldn't be so scared, but these are blood platelets!!!!

My dad is in Iraq, how dangerous is it?

You have to remember that the life expectancy has doubled in the last 500 years and has increased from 48 years to over 70 in the last 100 years. In the third question I would say that there is not enough information to say for sure. Doctors really don't know what causes heart disease and they treat the symptoms not the cause. They know that it is caused mostly by inflammation of the blood vessel but not why. Cholesterol is not the problem either. 50% of people who die from heart disease have normal cholesterol levels. So the real answer is the doctors are still trying to figure it out and in the mean time they treat what they can and adjust once new understanding come out.

Hey Brandon, I've been where you are. I'm 6'4" and when I was your age I was about 250lbs (not as muscular as you seem to be). But I desperately wanted to lose weight, and I too was always "the Big Guy". To be honest, muscle weighs more than fat and the protein shakes that you are using are meant to increase muscle mass equaling more weight. I think what you should be more concerned with in your case is your BMI (body mass index) instead of your weight because of your height . This is basically a ratio of how much of your body is fat and how much is muscle. When I was in the Navy, the max BMI for my height and weight was 22% and that is on the high side. In my personal opinion, I looked and felt the best at about 230lbs with a 19% BMI. I was only able to achieve this by completing boot camp for the Navy, but that's not always an option for everyone. My advice for you is to not worry so much about your weight and focus more on your BMI to keep healthy and fit. Good Luck to you!

I'm trying to determine what causes this severe itching.I don't have a rash, but the scratching is irritating my skin. Last night I drank a red wine (cabernet Sauvignon) with dinner and started itching. THis has been going on for some time now, and I am trying to deternime the cuase. I started taking symvastatin for cholesterol several months ago and thought that might be causing the itching, as I take it at night. I quit taking it for several days and thought that might be the problem. But then when I drank the red wine last night and started itching again, I'm wondering if that could be the problem. The itching occurs primarily at night and if I drink red wine, it is usually in the evening also. Any insight?

Can you keep multiple ball pythons in the same cage?
I recently posted a question regarding a ball of mine that wouldn't eat, and then had someone jump down my throat because I have 7 baby ball pythons living together. It's fine if they can't live together, I can make other arrangements, but please don't yell at me for not knowing that in the first place. We have 7 baby snakes, all born within 3 months of each other. There's 4 boys and 3 girls. They live in a cage that's probably about 100 gallons. There's plenty of climbing space, and at least 6 hiding homes, if not more. Temperature is at the proper level, along with humidity. The bedding is cleaned all the time along with fresh water. They have really good living conditions, but I'd like to know that even if that's true, if having so many of them together is bad. And when they grown up will the boys be able to live together, and the girls able to live together? Also we only give them filtered water, never just tap water. I really can't imagine that being harmful in any way, but I'd like a good opinion on that too.

I just got done with a court case and I am curious if it was adjudication or deferred prosecution. I am in Texas. I was more than willing to take the case to trial and not guilty. There were no terms in the agreement, besides me staying out of trouble for a year, basically nothing greater than a Class C moving violation. I made it very clear that I will not accept guilt or responsibility and that is hand written within the paper work that the judge signed. There was NO admission of guilt on any level and given the lack of evidence and the court not wanting it to go to jury trial the let me go with this deferment. Harassment charges from a vindictive, bipolar ex-girlfriend. Now I am trying to get a Concealed Handgun Permit which I found is not possible if you have recently been placed on deferred adjudication. I thought maybe deferred adjudication was what I had, but does not that require an admission of guilt or am I am deferred prosecution? The paperwork is titled, "Deferment of Prosecution", but I did not know if the paper work appears the same for people receiving deferred adjudication.

I used to play this game on the web. I think it was called either Knight's Quest or Knight's Tale...It was not flash and all you did was click click click. Female diagnosed with high testosterone levels...PCOS?
I am 27. I have had about 5 periods without bc since I was 13 and have been on birth control on and off since 16 so I would ovulate correctly. I tried many different obgyns to figure out why I wasnt ovulating by myself. No one had an answer. Ive had my thyroid checked over and over and everything comes back "normal". I got pregnant in 2009 on accident since I thought I couldnt without help. I was on birth control and messed up my pills which caused me to ovulate. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant. After my preganancy I gained 30 pounds in 2 months. I was still suffering from fatigue and weird emotions constantly. Recently I got more bloodwork done and the result was that my thyroid was fine but I had high testosterone and cholesterol and low vitamin D. I was put on metoformin 500mg. I have an appt with my obgyn to see if I have PCOS. I did my own research and it sounds like I do. Why was I never tested for it in the last 15 years? Can I still have thyroid issues even when the tests come back normal? What tests should I have them do? I want more children. Any advice for me!

My Doctor recently had me switch to an all vegan diet. Before which, he had me on all meats&veggies. I was pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure and really high cholesterol and high blood sugar. In less than 2 months, I've gotten it under control,with low blood pressure and my cholesterol is just slightly high. Still needing to improve though, he has me off of all Starches (pasta, bread, cereals, etc..) and no Fruits, because they are so high in natural sugar. Also, because of all the meat, I now have extremely high Protein levels. So,if you guys have any ideas on Vegan meal options, breakfast especially, or snack foods maybe? Wondering if I should take biology honors next year?
Since I was thinking about having a career in psychology, which is a branch of science, should I take biology honors next year as a sophomore since it's a higher level science class? I'm thinking it would look better for college. But then again, I don't know how much harder bio honors class is compared to regular biology. Anybody else taking it? I'm good at keeping an A in science, but it has slipped to a B before. I'm only afraid of taking an honors class because I don't know if I'm capable of doing my best in it. And I'm also afraid at how much harder it will be, and how much more of my time might go to school.. I'm also taking honors english because I'm pretty positive I'll do just fine in it, how hard will it be having multiple honors classes? I'm going to ask my counselor but I kinda want to know how other people might think of it.

That said, I think that butter is the least evil of spreadable fat products. I have no science to back that up, it's just what tastes best to me. I don't use butter at home. you have shin splints. the muscle is literally tearing away from the bone. the only thing for this is rest. when you run, it puts more pull on the muscle, making it tear away more. only run as much as you need to. taping around your shins to help hold the muscle against the bone when you must run may help. (i saw the track kids do this when they had shin splints.)

I have an under active thyroid and take 'Eltroxin'. I get occasional migraines with vision problems. What can I get 'over the counter' for migraines that won't adversely affect the thyroid medication? I am a 66 year old female. I also take 'Simvastatin' for high cholesterol

You can reverse the effects, but eventually, years from now, you will still develop diabetes. If you can get things back into normal, you will delay it for a very long time.
